While I do think politics is of vital importance here, I don’t believe it is our ace card here. We are vastly outnumbered when it comes to politics. When Gina and I met with our Congressman, Brad Wenstrup, DPM, he said, “This is not going to be solved in Washington. You (physicians) are going to have to fix this yourselves.”
Our ace in the hole here, which CANNOT be successfully opposed, if physicians can regain a semblance of the unity we had a few short decades ago (by focusing on one or more core professional issues where there is majority agreement) is simple:
Physicians control 80% of the healthcare dollar directly, through our orders (i.e. $2.4 Trillion/year, of $3 Trillion total, while receiving 8% of that dollar).
Our work is essential, and NO ONE else can do it.
We will win by voting with our feet. As Pam Wible says, this is a simple spouse abuse situation. We are abused, our patients are abused, yet we are terrified to leave our abuser, because it is the only home we have known, and we fear our abuser’s retribution. Believe me, our abuser will fear us much more, if we unite! As Castaneda wrote, “All human tyrants are petty tyrants.” in the face of that Force which rules the Universe.
For primary care docs, DPC is SO EASY!!
Check out Josh Umber’s “DPC Curriculum” under Resources at letmydoctorpractice.org. $300/mo., no contract, no set up fee, gets you a turnkey cloud based EHR and all the practice support you need to escape your suffering. That’s what I and many others have done. Write a letter to your patients, explaining why you must do this. You will break even with 200 patients, and make a great living ($240,000 take home) on 600 patients! Some of your patients will stay with you, some will leave and return.
Check out Lee Gross and Epiphany Health, Zubin Damania (Turntable/Iora Health), Pam Wible (Ideal Medical Practice) for other models.
For surgeons and other specialists:
***The key is to jump in all the way. The great cost savings comes from getting rid of all that bloat and waste and high overhead of participating in third parties. Once you are in an inch, the FULL weight of all of those huge costs and diversions from your patient are on your shoulders. I am so much happier practicing since I went total DPC, and it is so much easier to make money too.
