Guest Blog from Howie Mandel, MD
I am a strong believer in the Oath of Maimonides. It reads:
“Grant me the strength, time and opportunity always to correct what I have acquired, always to extend its domain; for knowledge is immense and the spirit of man can extend indefinitely to enrich itself daily with new requirements. Today he can discover his errors of yesterday and tomorrow he can obtain a new light on what he thinks himself sure of today…”
Unfortunately, the ABMS and the coalition of boards that make it up are in a tyrannical campaign that is being forced upon the physicians of America. They have conspired to manipulate the public, our governments as well as organized medical societies with an agenda that increases their revenue without any scientifically sound evidence that MOC is beneficial to the care and treatment of patients. Their media campaigns including “Choosing Wisely” have specific political goals that are not necessarily in every patient’s best interests. They feed numerous health journalists like Lisa Zamosky in her health care watch. “Choosing wisely” advocates not trusting your doctor and instead listening to its creators, organizations and governmental groups that have financed a one sized fits all “collectivist” mentality over the individualist approach to care and treatment as advocated by the Hippocratic and Maimonides Oaths.
Who in their right mind would tell someone “to not trust their doctor”? Look at who funds “Choosing Wisely”. ABIM, large insurance companies and the government. That’s right our tax dollars are telling the public, not to trust physicians.
One of my favorite scenes in a movie http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/298571/All-The-President-s-Men-Movie-Clip-Follow-The-Money.html says it all: Follow the Money $$$.
The former co-chair of the Safe Practices Committee of the National Quality Forum Dr. Charles Denham was caught taking over $ 11 million in bribes and current CEO Dr. Christine Kassel was forced to step down from several boards because of previously undisclosed conflicts of interests. BTW, she was previously the head of the ABIM, the largest funder of Choosing Wisely. Follow the Money.
The “wisest” choice a patient can make is picking a doctor that will explain the pros/cons and risks/benefits in an individualistic way and not a “one-sized” collectivist save the government money way.
The Alliance for Connected Care (the Alliance) is a 501(c)(6) organization that was formed to create a statutory and regulatory environment in which every provider in America is permitted to deliver and be “adequately compensated for providing safe, high quality care using Connected Care at his or her discretion, regardless of care delivery location or technological modality”. Their members are “leading companies from across the health care and technology spectrum, representing insurers, retail pharmacies, technology and telecommunications companies, and health care entrepreneurs…”——get it, follow the money
Led by former Senate Majority Leaders Tom Daschle and Trent Lott, and senior Senate Finance Committee member Senator John Breaux, the “goal of the Alliance is to create a legal and regulatory environment in which every provider in America is permitted to deliver safe, high quality care using telehealth technology at his or her discretion, and be compensated at a consistent rate regardless of care delivery location or technological delivery method.”
WAKE UP DOCS, these people want to out source your jobs and replace docs with physician extenders. There are multiple organizations that want patients to not trust their local doctor. There is BIG MONEY against us. We must stand up for our rights—No to ABMS, No to MOC, No to Choosing Wisely and No to the industrialization of medical practice.
